This seminar is designed for special education teachers and directors, psychologists, speech pathologists, counselors, social workers, classroom teachers, instructional aides, nurses, education specialists, principals, vice principals, case managers and parents.
FacultyJoe Carter, M.A., is a 25-year staff member of Glenwood, Inc., a private nonprofit autism and behavioral health center in Birmingham, focusing on the treatment and care of individuals with autism. He has focused on providing treatment and care to both children and adults with autism spectrum disorders for more than 25 years. Mr. Carter is a graduate of The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, where he earned his B.S. degree in psychology and M.A. degree in special education. Mr. Carter has held a variety of roles from providing direct support to administration. As vice president of adult services, he supervises residential, day habilitation, in-home services and supported employment services to approximately 70 adults with autism. Mr. Carter has worked with some individuals with autism from childhood through adulthood. Karen Bowen Dahle, Ed.D., NCSP, NCC, is an associate professor of special education at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She is trained in both the ADOS-R and ADI-R, with booster training. Dr. Dahle has been recognized for her teaching excellence at both the public school and university levels with appreciation as an outstanding clinical supervisor. She has presented throughout the country and internationally by acceptance of proposals and by invitation. Dr. Dahle has published extensively, including articles and chapters, and is working on a book for practitioners. She is an editor for Focus on Autism and Other Developmental Disabilities. Dr. Dahle earned her B.S. degree in behavior disorders, cum laude, from James Madison University; her M.S. degree in clinical psychology from Radford University; and her Ed.D. degree in special education, administration and supervision from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.
Rodney C. Lewis, Esq., is a shareholder in the Huntsville law firm of Lanier Ford Shaver & Payne, P.C. He is a graduate of the University of Tennessee and the Cumberland School of Law, Samford University. Mr. Lewis' practice involves the training, counseling and representation of school districts in special education and anti-discrimination related matters pursuant to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and other related laws. His litigation experience consists of representing school districts in state and federal courts, mediation sessions and administrative due process hearings. His representative published opinions include C.C. v. Huntsville City Board of Education, 106 LRP 6294 (2006); R.S. v. Madison City Board of Education, 106 LRP 12373 (2006); W.M. v. Huntsville City Board of Education, 44 IDELR 77 (2005); B.R. v. Florence City School System, 42 IDELR 129 (2004); C.G. v. Madison City Board of Education, 47 IDELR 59 (2006); D.K. v. Limestone County Board of Education, 41 IDELR 225 (June 16, 2004); K.B. v. Madison City Board of Education, 44 IDELR 174 (2005); In re Huntsville City Board of Ed., 22 IDELR 93 1 (1995); and In re Limestone County Board of Ed., 31 IDELR 122 (1999). Mr. Lewis has presented seminars at local, state and national conferences. He has also published articles pertaining to special education and anti-discrimination law, including 'Overview of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act' (2005) and 'Developing Legally Sound Section SO4 Programs' (2007).
