The Autism Society of Alabama will hold its annual Walk for Autism in Birmingham at Regions Park on Saturday, April 24, 2010 from 9:00 am to 11:30 am. Stakeholders, family members, and individuals affected by autism spectrum disorder (ASD) will walk the 2-mile course to raise money and awareness for this disorder which affects about 1% of Alabamians. There is an overwhelming need for support and services for individuals with ASD in Alabama. Registration is $25 which includes an event t-shirt and online registration is available.
Executive Director Melanie Jones adds,
“These Walks have been extremely effective in bringing more awareness of the autism epidemic to our communities. As of last year, the Autism prevalence rate in Alabama was 1 out of every 150. This rate has now increased to 1 out of every 110.” This year, participants will enjoy activities including a resource fair for parents, fun crafts and games for the kids, music and much more!
