APRIL IS AUTISM AWARENESS MONTH
ASA Boost Autism Awareness Month with Annual Walk

The Center for Disease Control reports that 1 in 150 people have autism. Given this increased rate, autism will soon become the most common disability in the United States. Alabama has as many as 30,000 individuals on the autism spectrum.

The Autism Society of Alabama (ASA) is sponsoring the 8th annual Walk for Autism on Saturday, April 11th at Vaughn Road Park. The registration desk opens at 8:30 a.m., the walk begins at 9:30 a.m. and the event concludes at noon. The cost is $25 per person, which includes the event tee shirt. On-line registration and pledge forms are available at www.autism-alabama.org. The expected attendance is approximately 200 walkers with many children with autism participating in the walk. The intent of this event is to increase awareness of autism, inform families of services currently available and bring community agencies together in order to support families with children living with autism.

A 3K walk, bubble creation station, face painting, temporary tattoos, sensory treasure hunt, bounce house, food vendors, exhibitor booths and cool prizes for the kids are all part of the carnival style event.
Proceeds from the Walk go to scholarships for children to attend  camps which specialize in the unique needs of those on the autism spectrum, host educational workshops, and start a Grandparents Breakfast Series to help educate grandparents about autism and how they can play a better role in their grandchild’s life.
