ALABAMA AUTISM TASK FORCE TO ANNOUNCE NEW STATE COORDINATOR POSITION IN MOBILE ON SEPTEMBER 30TH
The Alabama Autism Task Force will meet in Mobile on September 30th, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the Gerald Wallace Auditorium located at Spring Hill Medical Center.
The Autism Task Force, created by an act of the Alabama Legislature, is charged with bringing recommendations to the Governor and the Legislature for the 2009 Regular Session. The task force has been meeting at autism treatment centers, universities and public schools throughout the state to bring more awareness to this issue.
At the Mobile meeting on September 30th, the Task Force will hold a public hearing to discuss recent progress in state initiatives and the creation of a new position of State Coordinator for Autism in Alabama. This will be the first such position established by the State of Alabama.
Some state officials invited to address the group include Commissioner Steve Shivers of the Department of Rehabilitation Services, Alabama Mental Health Commissioner John Houston, Dr. Mabrey Whetstone, Director of Special Education Services for the Alabama Department of Education and State Representatives Jamie Ison and Jim Barton of Mobile.
Members of the Mobile County Legislative Delegation, the Mobile County Board of Education and Baldwin County Board of Education have been invited to participate in these public deliberations and help develop a legislative agenda for autism in the next legislative session.
