About ASA

The Autism Society of Alabama (ASA) is dedicated to improving services for individuals with autism spectrum disorders and their families through education and advocacy in Alabama.   ASA is a non-profit that serves its constituency through a population based model that is enhanced by our ability to interface with families one on one and in small group settings.  ASA is often the first place a family calls for several different reasons:  1) they have concerns about their child’s development, 2) their child has recently received a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and 3) they need assistance navigating the service delivery system.  The Autism Society provides: State level advocacy and representation – Concerns are voiced directly to state policy makers; ASA maintains a seat on the Interagency Autism Council. Information and referral – ASA is the state’s leading source for information on autism.  ASA makes referrals to providers, houses lending libraries and maintains a website at www.autism-alabama.org.   Support Groups – ASA has a network of over 20 support groups that are actively engaged in grassroots advocacy at the local level. Conferences and seminars – Education and training are essential pieces to developing quality services.  ASA offers a limited number of scholarships to statewide programs. Family Camps – In partnership with Easter Seals, ASA offers weekend family camps.  Parents report this shared recreational experience is invaluable. Awareness – Walk for Autism is held during April, Autism Awareness Month and Legislative Day is held annually at the Statehouse.  Additionally, Jerry the frog (ASA’s mascot), is an integral part of the organization’s education and outreach program.  He visits schools and makes numerous other appearances throughout the state spreading awareness, acceptance and understanding.

Why FROGS? For Research, Outreach and Giving Support to the autism and Asperger syndrome community.
