ASA’s History
The Autism Society of Alabama was founded by a group of parents who were in need of support and services for their children who were diagnosed with autism back in 1992. The organization held its first ever meeting in Huntsville in 1995. Since that time the organization has grown in strength and numbers. ASA received its 501c3 from the IRS in September of 2003.
Ten years ago autism affected 1/10,000 individuals, today 1 out of 150 babies born is diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder. The Early Warning Signs of Autism:If your baby shows any of these signs, please ask your pediatrician or family practitioner for an immediate evaluation:
- No big smiles or other warm, joyful expressions by six months or thereafter
- No back-and-forth sharing of sounds, smiles, or other facial expressions by nine months or thereafter
- No babbling by 12 months
- No back-and-forth gestures, such as pointing, showing, reaching, or waving by 12 months
- No words by 16 months
- No two-word meaningful phrases (without imitating or repeating) by 24 months
- Any loss of speech or babbling or social skills at any age
