services for high functioning? 2 Months, 3 Weeks ago
I have an 11yr. old w/ pdd-nos/high functioning autism. we've just had a consultation w/ glenwood--trying to figure out how to help my child succeed in school. she's in an inclusion classroom, but gets pulled to resource for reading, math, language. But she is still struggling terribly! I'm so disheartend to learn that unless she is very low functioning or m.r. there are NO services or programs in any school in our area for her. What does everyone else in this situation do?? She sticks out like a sore thumb w/ her learning disabilities and her speech and language delays. And yet she's smart enough to know it! HELP!

I also have a high functioning 10 year old daughter and have been evaluated from Glenwood. She is PDD-NOS and she also struggles in math the most but in other areas also. For the reasons you wrote we decided to homeschool her. We get to stay on a subject for as long as she needs to and I also have time to teach her things she will need to know about that they do not teach in school. I have left a message about a friend for her here but have had no responses yet.

HI, My son is 9,4th grade and HF PDD.
He has a full time in class aids that gives him academic support when he needs it. Per his IEP, they also adapt his curriculm or use alternative manipulatives like a calcutator or word processor to help facilitate learning. He is pulled for some support services minimally, because his in room aide does much of the support in class.
He goes to computer, music, art, PE and Lunch on his own.
He has had an aide since Kindergarten and this has worked beautifully.
Next year he will move to the middle school for 5th grade, and they are prepared to provide whatever level of aide assistance he needs.
This had worked great for us.
SInce he had an IEP with an autism diagnosis, no matter how HF he becomes, it will provided an aide in whtever manner we seem fit until he graduates from high school. We have been very happy with the services at school. They not only meet his academic needs and unique learning approaches but also work diligently on his social and life skills as well.

I Have a 13 year old son , and he has just been diagnosed with Aspergers, I have been trying to get help at the school for 4 years! Finally this year because he was orginally diagnoised with ADD. Try that! It is amazing the help he is getting this year! Good luck!

Unfortunately you're not alone. My 11 year old son has high functioning autism and is struggling in school as well. We have talked to several schools in Bham area that specialize in children with learning disabilities but none of them seem to take children with autism. It's a joke and a shame at the same time. Keep your head up and keep looking, there's bound to be help out there somewhere, we just have to find it.

Yep, I agree that it's a joke and a shame at the same time. You laugh, then you cry! It looks like we'll just have to make our own program. We're waiting for our written report from Glenwood and then will call a meeting with everyone in school to ask for what we need for our child...to demand what we need I should say! I'm slowly meeting a few more moms in my area and we are sort of forming our own little support/resource group. Unfortunatly for us, they have sons...so not really potential friends for my girly-girl. BUT, through this forum we have made a pen pal for her!! I was really hoping we lived closer, but pen pal will suffice for now, and my daughter is proud and excited to say she (finally!) has a "friend".
