HI,
I have a 9 year old son who is PDD. He is verbal and doing well. I was wondering if there is a local support group for mothers of ASD children. I am interested in joining one.
My son also plays baseball with the Miracle League in Moody. He is very athletic and is really craving more outlets in this area.He is very good and quite obsessed with basketball. Can anyone guide me to facilities in the Bham area that have programs in athletics or in music for special needs kids? Thanks,Kim

There is a very active group that meets in Shelby County, they actually have a meeting this Friday. If you would like more information, please call Anna Bloom, ASA's Program Manager. I am sure the group would love to have you.

I have a 7 year old son who is AS and also very highly functional. He actually plays on a regular city league team. We signed him up before his diagnosis! I told the coach about his diagnosis, and my husband helps coach, and we have had no problems at all. He is in fact one of the better players. I know at age 9 some of the social differences are more obvious, but just a thought. I also don't want my son to feel different, because he is more like his peers than he is different. Since he is able to play on a regular league, I felt it was better for him emotionally. If your son is athletically comparable to other 9 year olds and emotionally able, i'd consider a regular league. Good luck!

If you are interested in the Shelby Co support group, they typically meet the 2nd Friday of the month from 6-8 p.m. Over the summer, they are having more activities than support group speakers--you can view the schedule on the ASA's homepage under 'support groups'. Also, the Hoover Rec has a lot of recreation opportunities for children with special needs.
