TOPIC: new to B-ham

new to B-ham 4 Months, 1 Week ago
I will be moving to the B-ham/Hoover area in 2 weeks and my 3 1/2 year old son was just diagnosed with PDD.
What resources are available in the state of Alabama? are there centers in B-ham that could assist me with treating my son?
Are there support groups? I am so new to this, I don't know where to start!
Someone, anyone, please help...

hi! We just moved back to Bhm in April. I was in your boat. I don't know where you are moving from, but things here were different than where we lived before (little rock, ar). I would 1st contact the Hoover school system. You really need to get him in the early intervention program as soon as possible. The reason is..Kindegarten will go much better if your child has a current IEP and is already receiving services. The Hoover school system does offer a preschool program for children with special needs. It is at Trace Crossing elem, I think. This would be free if your child qualified. It is 1/2 "normal" kids and 1/2 "special needs". There is also Mitchell's Place in Bhm. It is a private school for kids on the spectrum, but it is pricey. I have contacted the clinic at UAB to have my son evaluated there. It is called the Sparks clinic. I can get you that info if you would like. It takes up to 3 mo to get an appt. There is also a support group on Yahoo. We have meetings once a month at Oak Mountain Presbyterian - off Hwy 119. I have not been able to go yet, b/c my husband travels alot. Anyway, please feel free to email me at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it if you have any othere questions. My son just turned 5 and has several medical problems and is somewhere on the spectrum. We do not have a specific diagnosis from a dr, just the school district and his former therepists. I think he is mildly autistic or PDD-NOS. He is such a blessing. I also have a 6 yr old boy going into 1st grade and a 2 yr old daughter. I don't know tons of people here even though I grew up here, so contact me if you like. Hope this helps!
