Program Description
The in-service will review requirements for physical education as mandated through the federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. Common needs of children
on the autism spectrum will be described. Strategies for meeting those needs during physical education will be provided.
Purpose and Audience
The target audiences are: supervisors, mental health professionals, physical education teachers, special education teachers, any professional that has
contact with individuals with autism spectrum disorders.
Learning Objectives
1) Participants will be able to list requirements for physical education as mandated through the Federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.
2) Describe common needs of children on the autism spectrum.
3) Offer strategies for meeting the needs of children with autism spectrum disorders during physical education services provided in the student’s least restrictive environment.
CEs 4.0 contact hours per participant are available for social workers, counselors, and psychologists. 4.5 CEs are available for nurses - must have license number available at registration. Participants must attend the entire workshop to receive the approved number of CE credits. Partial credits will not be allowed.
