One Day Training

“Choosing Community One Person at a Time”---Supported Employment as an Option

Supported Employment is a well defined approach to supporting people with high support needs in community employment. Yet national data shows only 22% of individuals receiving day supports from state mental retardation or developmental disability (MR/DD) agencies participate in integrated employment. For other disability populations, the rate is equally dismal. Many reasons are attributed to the lack of employment outcomes.  These include no transportation, fear of losing SSA benefits, loss of Waiver support, parents and/or guardian’s resistance to employment, and others. To address this critical concern in our state, the Alabama Department of Mental Health and Alabama APSE will sponsor workshops across the state that will focus on issues that are vital to building new supported employment services and to increasing the quality of existing services.

Specifically, these workshops will address:
  • What does “good” supported employment look like?
  • How do I continue best practices when our funding does not support it?
  • What partnerships are needed for positive quality outcomes?
  • How do our services, values, and mission impact our community?
  • Are we poised with the right people and structure to deliver what we promise?
  • Who should go to work and how do we make it happen?
  • How do we provide individualized services (one-person-at-a-time) when we have so many people to support?

In this workshop you will:

  • Identify essential components of successful Supported Employment
  • Learn how to maintain your program integrity in light of funding challenges
  • Identify and evaluate your stakeholders and partnerships
  • Discover how your organizational values influence community employment
  • Understand the required competencies of your Supported Employment professionals and program leaders
  • Discern real solutions to values conflicts within your organization, and between individuals and families
  • Evaluate your employment program design and outcomes
