ALIDA SUMMER READING CONFERENCE
We are so very excited that Nancy Coffman, Shelton School of Dallas, Texas, will be presenting a full-day workshop on multisensory strategies for use with struggling readers in all grades for us this summer on Saturday July 18 from 8:30 a.m.- 4:00 p.m. at the Wynfrey Hotel at the Galleria in Hoover, AL.. Nancy (originally from Alabama) comes to us as the Associate Director of Outreach with the Shelton School http://www.shelton.org She is past president of the Academic Language Therapy Association and is the current president of the Alliance for Accreditation and Certification of Structured Language Education, Inc http://www.allianceaccreditation.org/).

In her outreach work with Shelton School, Nancy will also be providing ongoing professional development through two-year contracts with the Vestavia Hills City Schools and with the Oxford City Schools beginning this summer. Teachers from those systems who complete required coursework and practicum experiences will be eligible to take the national examination administered by the Alliance and will then be awarded national certification in multisensory structured language education (MSLE) and will be eligible to become Certified Academic Language Therapists (CALT).

Nancy is an experienced teacher and a gifted presenter who will share information about multisensory teaching strategies which form the bedrock of research-based intervention for students who struggle due to word-level reading deficits including dyslexia. Nancy has also worked extensively with older students with profound reading difficulties so we are sure that her message will be of value to teachers at all grade levels. CEUs for Speech-Language Pathologists through ASHA will be available.

Workshop Description:
Multisensory strategies are effective in addressing word and text-level difficulties experienced by many students including those students with dyslexia. Principles of multisensory instruction will be described and word and text-level multisensory strategies appropriate for all grade levels will be demonstrated.

Learner Outcomes:
At the conclusion of this activity, the participant will be able to:
1) describe issues related to delivery of effective language instruction for students with dyslexia and other language learning disabilities in public and/or private schools.

2) describe the critical components for proficient reading including language development, phonological awareness, decoding, fluency and comprehension.

3)•utilize multisensory language instruction strategies in a classroom setting to improve word-level and text-level literacy skills.

4) utilize multisensory language instruction strategies in a classroom setting to enhance vocabulary essential to text comprehension.

5) integrate and review phonics, spelling and vocabulary through daily multisensory activities in the classroom.

About Nancy Coffman
Nancy Coffman is the Associate Director of Outreach for the Shelton School and Evaluation Center in Dallas, Texas. This summer, she will be initiating in-depth MSLE instruction leading to national certification for teachers in two Alabama school systems. She taught learning different students, oversaw the alphabetic phonics program at The Shelton School, and was an original contributor to the Shelton Model for Organization and Study Skills. She holds a bachelor's degree in psychology from The University of the South, a master's degree in special education from Vanderbilt University, is a Certified Academic Language Therapist and a Qualified Instructor in Alphabetic Phonics and an adjunct instructor for Dallas Baptist University. Nancy is a member of the International Dyslexia Association, the Alliance for Accreditation and Certification of Structured Language Education, Inc. (Alliance) and the Academic Language Therapy Association (ALTA). Nancy is currently president of the Alliance and immediate past president of ALTA.
