Autism Awareness License Plate Frequently Asked Questions *What if my regular tag isn’t up for renewal? The time frame we have to do this is between Dec 1, 2011 and Nov 30, 2012. You may continue to order your current tag’s registration online or by mail whenever it is up for renewal; however, you must go in person to complete the tag commitment form and pay $50 (above your regular tag cost). The State mandates that 1000 commitments with a payment of $50 be secured before it will produce the proposed tag. This ensures the State that our supporters WANT a tag for our cause. It usually takes one year after the 1000 pre-paid commitments are made to produce the new tag. *Where does the money from the cost of the tag go? $41.50 from the tag cost goes back to support the mission and projects of the Autism Society of Alabama (ASA) and is tax deductible. *Why is an Autism Awareness tag important? Not only does this tag generate awareness of our cause, but it can also alert first responders that a person with an autism spectrum disorder may be a passenger in the automobile. *When will I get my tag? The State will notify the Autism Society and we in turn will notify you when it’s time to take your original form and receipt showing you’ve paid for the tag to your local courthouse or DMV. *What if I get to the courthouse and the tag specialists do not know about this tag? ASA has received an official letter from the State notifying us that our tag is approved. In case this could be an issue for some, print out this letter and take it with you. Click here for the official letter *What if I’m too busy or don’t want to stand in line to complete the commitment form? The ONLY way this tag will become a reality is to commit to standing in line ONE time. Knowing it’s ONE time for the ONE in 110 is worth the wait. Some counties are more congested than others. If you absolutely cannot go in person to your local courthouse or DMV, you may complete a Power Of Attorney (POA) along with $50 allowing someone else to make the transaction for you. If the POA is your option, please read the form carefully. MAKE SURE YOU INCLUDE YOUR DRIVERS LICENSE NUMBER, EXPIRATION DATE, AND DATE OF BIRTH for whoever is going to the courthouse for you. Click here to download the POA form. Click here for a POA sample with instructions. The POA must be completed for each car that you’re committing to buy the tag. The POA must be notarized. A bank usually has a notary public on staff. *What if my tag is already personalized and I want the same on the Autism tag? When completing the Commitment to Purchase form, let the tag specialist know that you want to use the same personalization. Those who want to personalize their new Autism Awareness tag may also do so at no additional cost to the $50. |
